The World According to Kary Mullis, #1

Kary Mullis was a Nobel prize-winning scientist, a colorful wordsmith, and possibly a bit of a curmudgeon. Mullis:

“Sometimes in the morning, when it’s a good surf, I go out there, and I don’t feel like it’s a bad world.”

“Science grows like a weed every year.”

“I’m really optimistic in the mornings.”

The following is a brief history of virus science from the days of AIDS to the present, told mostly through the words of Kary Mullis. Mullis cared about the truth, so much so that he was willing to alienate his colleagues:

“Scientists are doing an awful lot of damage to the world in the name of helping it. I don’t mind attacking my own fraternity because I am ashamed of it.” – NY Times

Mullis won the Nobel prize for his invention of the PCR process that amplifies small amounts of RNA or DNA. This was a great leap forward for scientists as they could share samples for research purposes. Years after the hypothesis that HIV is the cause of AIDS the PCR process was used to “prove” this assertion. It was an assertion that Mullis says is not based on science:

“It’s not even probable, let alone scientifically proven, that HIV causes AIDS. If there is evidence that HIV causes AIDS, there should be scientific documents which either singly or collectively demonstrate that fact, at least with a high probability. There are no such documents.” – Spin Magazine, Vol. 10 No.4, 1994

“The mystery of that damn virus has been generated by the $2 billion a year they spend on it. You take any other virus, and you spend $2 billion, and you can make up some great mysteries about it too.” – uncoverdc.com

“People keep asking me, ‘You mean you don’t believe that HIV causes AIDS?’ And I say, ‘Whether I believe it or not is irrelevant! I have no scientific evidence for it.’ I might believe in God, and He could have told me in a dream that HIV causes AIDS. But I wouldn’t stand up in front of scientists and say, ‘I believe HIV causes AIDS because God told me.’ I’d say, ‘I have papers here in hand and experiments that have been done that can be demonstrated to others.’” – California Monthly, Sept 1994

“[Aids] is not ‘God’s wrath’ or any other absurdity. A segment of our society was experimenting with their lifestyle, and it didn’t work. They got sick. Another segment of our pluralistic society, call them doctor/scientist refugees from the failed War on Cancer, or just call them professional jackals, discovered that it did work. It worked for them. They are still making payments on their new BMWs out of your pocket.” – Dancing Naked in the Mind Field. Vintage Books. 2000

“It’s not what somebody believes, it’s experimental proof that counts. And those guys don’t have that.” – California Monthly, Sept 1994

Since Mullis did not agree with the theory that HIV causes AIDS it is not surprising that he was a critic of AIDS treatments:

“For somebody who is just HIV-positive, taking AZT would be the only thing really hurting them.” – The Truth on AIDS

Mullis died in 2019. What would he have said about the the current “pandemic?” Here’s a good clue:

“Human beings are full of retroviruses. We don’t know if it is hundreds or thousands or hundreds of thousands. We’ve only recently started to look for them. But they’ve never killed anybody before. People have always survived retroviruses.” – The Truth on AIDS

Retrovirus was the bogeyman of the 1980’s. Is coronavirus the bogeyman of the 2020’s?
